The Buying Process

Both the breeder (seller) and buyer have responsibilities in the breeding and buying process

The breeder should:

  • Provide parents which have full (not limited) AKC registration

  • Have health tested both parents. Most commonly, buyers should be able to look up health testing information at the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (www.ofa.org).

  • Verified that both parents are of good temperament.

  • Verified that both parents are of proper age and in good health.

  • Socialized the puppies during their time in the litter.

  • Have initial vaccinations, worming, and health checks for the puppies prior to sale.

  • Provide a contract which:

  • Requires return of the puppy to the breeder in the event that the buyer can no longer keep the puppy

  • If sold as "pets", sold on a spay/neuter contract which delays the spay/neuter until fully grown

  • If sold as "show potentials", the breeder should have a history of successfully showing dogs

The buyer should:

  • ·Understand the special needs of a Great Dane puppy.

  • Be prepared for house-breaking and other activities associated with a new puppy.

  • Be prepared to take the puppy to puppy kindergarden. It is additionally recommended that the puppy parent should participate in the Canine Good Citizen program to train both the puppy parent and puppy.
